As in Jean Cocteau’s text “La Dame de Monte-Carlo“, the only option which remains to a middle-aged woman who has neither money nor beauty, neither youth nor a man is death. The colourful music of Francis Poulenc takes us on a trip through the dame’s inner conflicts, her dreams and finally her inevitable confrontation with the reality of a society that marginalizes her.
